It was exam week at Sunshill School — and something strange was happening.
Students who studied well suddenly forgot answers the moment the question paper arrived. Pencils trembled. Erasers were chewed. One boy even stared at Question 1 for ten full minutes without writing a word.
“This,” declared Detective Dog Cracker Chestnut, adjusting his tiny magnifying glasses, “is clearly a mystery!”
With his notebook tucked under one paw, he began investigating.
First stop: the classroom corridor. He sniffed fear, worry… and a strong smell of panic.
A purple Panic Monster seemed to float around the exam hall whispering, “You will forget everything… you will forget everything…”
“Aha!” barked Cracker Chestnut. “The culprit is not the exam — it’s nervousness!”
He gathered the students before the next paper.
“Rule number one,” he said, wagging his tail wisely, “read all questions slowly. Your brain needs warming up, just like sports practice.”
“Rule two: breathe in… breathe out… three times. Panic hates slow breathing.”
“Rule three: stuck? Skip and return later. Smart detectives never waste time on one clue.”
The students followed his advice.
Soon pencils moved smoothly, foreheads relaxed, and confidence returned. Even the Panic Monster shrank smaller and smaller until — poof! — it disappeared completely.
After the exam, the children cheered.
“The mystery is solved!” announced Cracker Chestnut. “Exams don’t steal answers. Fear does.”
From that day on, whenever exams arrived, students remembered the detective dog’s secret:
Stay calm. Think clearly. And let your brain do the barking.
