Q. What did schools learn from the first year of starting the academic year in April under NEP?
It started from standard six. Now it has gone to standard nine. Children are learning from the roots. They are learning by hand, by field. They are trying to delve deep into nature, into reality or the surroundings, trying to know more about the things that are there around. Definitely NEP is making good progress.
Q. What changes are already being followed under NEP?
Lower level classes will now be taken into consideration. It is still on the trial basis. The outcome will be known only at the end of the year. Sixth standard is doing it well. Teachers are taking some time to go deep into it, but trainings have already been imparted and teachers will do a good job.
Q. Has the April start helped students?
Yes, definitely because one month they are getting a knowledge of what the entire year syllabus would be. When they come in June, they will know much better what they are going to learn.
Q. Many parents were unsure. What would you say to them?
When something new is introduced, there is always apprehension because we are used to a particular system. It takes time for people to digest certain things. Now children are getting ample opportunities to choose as per their liking-art, music, dance or practical skills. We have to give time to each thing
Q. Your message for parents and students?
Parents should be involved. They should attend meetings, visit schools and understand their child’s interests. Only then our system will change.
