Dear Editor,

I appreciate the explanation about the girl’s menstrual cycle and how a girl should not feel shy or confuses about it. I wish to express my views on the topic.

The article says that girls should speak fearlessly and openly about their periods and that the boys should be understanding and not tease. I totally agree about this.

But I think that this is not possible unless menstrual education starts at a young age because you can’t expect a girl to  speak about her periods fearlessly in higher classes. Menstrual education should start from an early age, like std 3 or 4, like it is done so in Finland.  Because many boys in India are not even aware that girls go through periods. Only the boys uneducated about periods tend to tease. And directly in a higher grade like 6 or 7th, it will not be easy to get boys to understand and not tease. It will also be very uncomfortable for the girl to speak about her periods because at that time even the girl will be used to hiding and staying quiet about her periods.

I also appreciate that in United States periods are explained in health classes. This teaches us why girls get periods. In a country like India, periods are always something that is hidden, not spoken about. Girls have never been encouraged to speak openly or learn about periods. Some girls first hear and understand what periods are when they get them. This should not happen. If kids learn about menstrual cycle at a young age, when a girl gets her first period, the other boys and girls will already be educated about periods,  providing a comfortable and understanding environment around the girl.
