St. Gabriel’s School had begun to look like a postcard—icicle lights, tinsel, a giant courtyard tree. Parents and teachers promised the best Christmas carnival ever.
Then, at 3:13 AM, the security guard heard a crash.
By sunrise, posters screamed: THE CRYSTAL STAR IS GONE!
The Star wasn’t decoration. It held tiny stones collected over 10 years—one from each graduating batch. The school’s memory. Its pride.
Blame flew everywhere. The choir blamed the football boys.
The football boys blamed the teachers. The teachers blamed “lazy security.”
Only one creature stayed calm: Cracker Chestnut. He sniffed the broken display. Not glue. Not paper. Mint. Only one teacher used mint oil: Mrs. Bhavna, the strict maths teacher. Chestnut trotted to her classroom.
Empty. Chalk dust everywhere. On the board: 2 + 2 ≠ 4. A clue. He barked once. Principal Varma followed. Behind the notice board lay a sea-blue feather with gold tips.
Not a sparrow. Not a crow. Not from India. A macaw feather. The carnival had an exotic bird show yesterday. Chestnut sprinted—past the choir, past food stalls. The bird master was loading cages. Chestnut leaped. One paw on a cage— Inside sat the Crystal Star, buried beneath seed packets.
The bird master raised his hands. “I didn’t steal it! A student gave it to me. He said the school didn’t deserve it.” That student was Aarav, Class 8—brilliant but invisible, rejected twice by the Art Club. Chestnut found him behind the bleachers, head bowed. He simply rested his head on the boy’s knee.
Aarav sobbed, “If the Star vanished, maybe someone would notice me.” That night, the Star returned with a new line beneath it:
