Cultivating Happiness and Emotional Intelligence in Finland Schools

Finland school have this one unique value that other countries must inspire to inculcate

A small country with a big idea—Finland puts emotional well-being in the syllabus

Imagine going to school and having a class dedicated to learning how to handle your emotions, be kind to yourself, and build stronger relationships. That’s what some schools in Finland are doing.

According to reports, Since 2014, emotional and social skills have been part of Finland’s national curriculum. While some schools blend these lessons into subjects like language or science, others go further—like in the town of Kouvola, where children have special classes led by well-being tutors (some of whom used to be psychiatric nurses!). These sessions cover topics like self-esteem, motivation, and how to manage stress.

Some Finnish teachers even undergo mindfulness training, learning how to help students stay calm, focused, and kind—not just to others, but to themselves too.

The idea is simple: If we want students to grow up into thoughtful, balanced, and confident adults, we have to start by giving them the tools to understand their own minds. Finland believes these skills are just as important as maths or reading—and their classrooms reflect that.
