The annual Night Football Final at Mango Tree School was famous across Goa. Students, parents and teachers packed the stadium every year, waving banners and blowing whistles. But this year’s final was extra special because the winning team would receive the sparkling Golden Boot Trophy for the very first time.
At exactly 6 p.m., Coach Pinto carefully placed the official match football inside a locked glass cabinet beside the field. Hundreds of students watched as he locked it and slipped the key into his pocket.
Then, at 6:15 p.m., the stadium lights suddenly went out.
One second.
Two seconds.
Seven seconds total.
When the lights returned…
…the football had vanished.
The cabinet was still locked.
No broken glass.
No open doors.
No muddy footprints.
“This,” whispered Cracker Chestnut, adjusting his green detective cap, “is a proper mystery.”
The clever detective dog ignored the cabinet and instead studied the scoreboard, the floodlights and the marching band stand nearby.
Then he noticed something strange.
One trumpet smelled strongly of fresh grass. A tiny silver screw lay under a chair. And the giant bass drum seemed heavier than before.
Most people ignored these clues.
Cracker didn’t.
He climbed onto the stage, sniffed the drum carefully, and barked loudly.
“The thief never touched the cabinet!”
The crowd gasped.
Cracker explained that during the blackout, a hidden vacuum tube above the cabinet had sucked the football upward and carried it secretly into the bass drum.
The culprits were twins Neil and Neeraj from the science club.
“We only wanted to test our football-moving invention,” they admitted sadly.
The football was returned just in time for kickoff.
And from that night onward, Cracker Chestnut became famous as: The dog who shot the impossible goal
