Somewhere on the digital highway, we bumped into Cherry Di — powered by cherries, chai and dangerously large amounts of wisdom. She has now unofficially taken over this corner of jusUNMUTE. 🍒☕
Once upon a time, children lost races, forgot homework, dropped catches and survived perfectly well. Today, however, many parents rush in like emergency rescue teams the moment disappointment appears. A forgotten water bottle becomes a parental mission. A poor test score becomes a family crisis. And if a child loses a football match? Some adults look more upset than the players.
But experts increasingly believe that losing may actually be a hidden superpower.
Why? Because children who never fail often struggle when real life finally says “no.”
A child who loses a race learns resilience. A child who does not win every competition slowly discovers patience, grit and humility. Losing teaches something success rarely can: how to get back up without applause.
Of course, no parent enjoys seeing their child sad. Indian parents especially are famous for wanting to protect children from pain, disappointment and embarrassment. But constantly clearing every obstacle may accidentally create children who panic at small failures later in life.
Many successful adults were once rejected, ignored, defeated or criticised. What made them stronger was not endless winning — it was learning how to recover.
This does not mean parents should become strict generals shouting, “Failure builds character!” after every maths test. Children still need encouragement, hugs and support.
But perhaps the goal of parenting is not to raise children who never lose.
It is to raise children who know they can survive losing — and still try again tomorrow.
