Schools in India have begun with the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP). With the current ongoing heatwave many states have given holidays for the schools.
In Goa, NEP has started in full swing with the summer break shortened and the new academic year that has already begun in April. The heat however makes play and study in the holidays exhausting. Continuous power and water cuts add to the exhaustion.
Shubham is a class 10 student from Goa. For him this vacation is teaching him balancing. He says “ I have just started with SSC and everyone keeps reminding me to study, even during holidays! My parents ask me to study literally every day for 2 hours in the morning and evening. I love football so I have to finish my studies fast so I can play with my friends.” He also told us that he is taking football coaching in the morning and plays for fun in the evening when the sun is not overhead.
“I will go to Nagpur or Bombay to study after finishing my SSC. So I have to study hard to pass with good marks at any cost. I study 5 hours a day daily studying each subject in the day and evening I go out to the beach or play” says Sonal Kalangutkar. She wants to become a doctor and hopes to clear NEET someday.
Peter, unlike them, is happy to have passed the 9th grade and move onto SSC. “ It feels strange this year. The academic year began in April. Luckily the school has no extra class for me, so I’m relaxing this may! Plus it’s so so so hot! I do revise occasionally but I want to relax and get ready for the year”.
