G.K. Vijayakumari: The Sprint of Resilience
G.K. Vijayakumari grew up in a small village in Karnataka and didn’t even know what athletics was until she was selected by the Sports Authority of India. She trained hard, studied in a sports hostel, and slowly became one of India’s best 400-metre runners. But her journey wasn’t easy. For six years she struggled without proper tracks, traveled long distances to train, worked a full-time job, and almost quit many times. With support from her husband, coaches, and family, she fought back and won gold in an international race in 2025. Today, she inspires village children and dreams of reaching the Asian Games and Olympics.
Dipala Chauhan: The Woman Who Runs a Mountain Rescue for 300 Animals
In the hills of Himachal Pradesh, Dipala Chauhan runs a huge animal shelter all by herself. She cares for over 300 animals — dogs, cows, donkeys, cats, and even chickens. Every day, she cooks huge pots of food, cleans their spaces, and treats injured animals. Winters are tough, and sometimes she has to carry heavy sacks of fodder up the slopes. People call her when they find hurt animals, and she brings them to her shelter for life. Even though she faced many problems, including her houses being burnt down, she never gave up. Today, locals respect her, and children learn kindness by visiting her shelter.
The Gym-Tricks of Birds
Some birds can move so fast it feels like they have superpowers — like waving their wings sixty times in a single second! Dr. Mark Fuxjager, a scientist who studies these “nature athletes,” discovered that their muscles have a special ability: they respond directly to hormones, almost like getting a natural power boost. This makes their moves — flips, drumming, and super-fast wing snaps — incredibly quick and precise. Woodpeckers, for example, use these boosted muscles to drum perfectly on trees. Scientists still don’t know how pollution or habitat changes affect these super-muscles, but for now, birds continue to show off amazing gym tricks in the wild.
Angeline Sheril: The Record-Breaking Dancer
Angeline Sheril from Cuddalore is a dancer, teacher, and young mother who has broken more than 20 national and regional records. She performs amazing Tamil folk dances — sometimes balancing pots on her head, dancing on wooden stilts, or even doing Bharatanatyam on broken glass. Just three months after her C-section, she danced for one and a half hours with a heavy karagam balanced on a wooden leg. Angeline runs a dance school where she teaches children, especially those from less privileged families, the beauty of Tamil folk arts. She believes dance and studies should go hand in hand and wants to protect traditional art forms for future generations.
Eashwar Malpe: The Man Who Dives to Help Others
Along the coast of Malpe in Karnataka, one man has spent over 20 years diving into deep rivers and the ocean to help families find loved ones who went missing in the water. His name is Eashwar Malpe. Even though he once dreamed of joining the military, life didn’t allow it — so he chose another way to serve people. With a small team of volunteers, he has carried out more than 2,500 rescue and recovery missions, all free of cost. The work is dangerous, but Eashwar believes helping families find peace is the greatest reward. He now hopes to open a swimming academy for children so more young people can learn to save lives.
