Big changes are coming to Goa’s schools! Starting April 1, 2025, students in Classes 6 to 10 and Class 12 will begin their academic year two months earlier. That means no more long summer break before school
kicks off—just straight into the grind.
Why the Change?
Officials argue this shift aligns Goa with national education boards like CBSE and ICSE, making learning
more structured and reducing last-minute syllabus rushes. Following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the government believes the change will distribute school days more evenly instead of cramming everything into a short academic year. According to Education Director Shailesh Zingde (as reported by media), schools will hold morning classes until 11:30 AM in April, followed by summer holidays from May 1 to June 3. Regular school hours resume from June 4. The idea is to avoid the chaotic February- March crunch, but is Goa ready for this switch?
Teachers and Parents React
Not everyone is on board. Teachers are particularly concerned about the scorching April heat. “Most schools don’t have ACs, and sitting in a stuffy classroom will be a challenge,” said a teacher.
One principal from Raia welcomed the change, calling it an opportunity for progress. “Change brings new possibilities, and we should look at
this with optimism,” she remarked. Parents, too, are divided. A parent from Mapus is seeing a silver lining: “Honestly, after a few weeks of vacation, I run out of things to do with my kids. At least this keeps them engaged.”
Is Goa Ready?
While the government remains confident, several logistical challenges loom. Will Schools receive additional cooling solutions like fans or air conditioning? Can rural schools handle the heat? This might be one of Goa’s biggest education policy shifts in years. Will it leads to better learning or a sweaty disaster remains to be seen.
