jusUNMUTE met up with Atharv Surlekar of Mae dos Pobres High School for his recent feat
What inspired you to create the Magno-Magical Gloves?
While observing municipal waste workers, I noticed how difficult it was for them to separate metal waste from other refuse. The plastic gloves they wore also offered very little protection. Seeing this inspired me to design the Magno-Magical Gloves, which make metal segregation easier while providing better safety.
How did you feel when you found out you were selected to represent India in Japan?
Japan has always been my favourite country, and I had always dreamed of visiting it at least once in my life. I never imagined that I would get the opportunity to travel there on my own because of a project I created. It truly feels like a dream come true. I have always admired Japanese culture, traditions, anime, and the country’s remarkable spirit of innovation.
What are you most excited to see or learn in Japan?
I am most excited to experience Japanese culture and traditions and to learn more about the country’s incredible technological advancements.
What was the biggest challenge while working on your project?
The biggest challenge was fitting all the components into a glove while making sure it remained comfortable, practical, and easy to use.
What advice would you give students who dream of becoming scientists?
Dream big, stay determined, and work hard towards your goal. And when you achieve it, don’t stop there. Keep learning, keep improving, and continue challenging yourself to do even better.
How will you introduce Goa to your new friends in Japan?
For me, this is about more than representing Goa—I will be representing India. I want people in Japan to see that Indians are warm, respectful, and kind-hearted. I was especially happy to see how much the Japanese audience appreciated our cultural dance during the programme.
