LAJWANTI D’SOUZA
The other day, I walked into a supermarket and spotted a neat pile of jusUNMUTE. Naturally, I swelled with pride for three full seconds before turning into a one-person sales team.
“Do you read this?” I asked a boy eyeing the chips.
“Yes,” he nodded. “But it needs more content for Class 10 students.”
Sharp feedback. Future CEO material.
Trying to continue the conversation, I asked, “So when does your school reopen?”
He shrugged. “Maybe June 1. Or 6th. Or 8th.”
That day was May 28.
“You don’t know?”
“No. The message comes on WhatsApp. My parents will know. Then they’ll tell me.”
I stood there emotionally defeated by modern civilisation.
When we were children, reopening dates were sacred knowledge. They were announced on the last day, written in calendars, and discussed all summer.
Today’s child operates differently.
Homework? WhatsApp.
Projects? WhatsApp. Exams? WhatsApp. The boy looked puzzled by my shock.
“All information comes on the group,” he explained kindly. “So I don’t have to remember anything.” Efficient? Absolutely.
Slightly terrifying? Also yes.
