“For the past two years, Goa schools began the academic year in April under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. However, Education Director Shailesh Zingde has announced that from next year, schools will return to the traditional June start.”
The academic year began in April under the NEP 2020 for 2 consecutive years! Now, next year it won’t! Said the education minister Sailesh Zingde. It will begin in June the next year. The reason being for the betterment of the students.
Students of course are happy with this news! Jasiel Gonsalves from Margao, is super excited! He exclaimed “finally! I’m so happy! But I just wish they said it two months earlier! I missed joining an interesting workshop.” His mother Mrs. Judy Gonsalves was also happy with this news. “I’m happy with this decision. Children have a certain capacity of studying than they should be able to learn by themselves through play. Our schools have a structured syllabus that teachers have to complete and every child deserves a break to play freely and learn. Especially in the heat Goa experienced this summer. Anyways better late than never is all I can say.”
Teachers too are happy with this decision. Mr. Rudra Naik from a government school, says “this is a good decision.” He goes on to say that “However, some working parents will not be happy with this change, especially ones at work the full day.”
Mr Naik, than added that, “The government gives teachers additional duties in the summer. We had to go to conduct surveys. Teachers were less in schools. Results were delayed and we never got a relaxing break.”
He lamented on the additional duties and love that teachers it in. “People think teachers work half day, but no one sees the heaps of books and work we take home everyday from school.”
While the decision is well appreciated by all, change again can be overwhelming for the full day employed parents. The decision marks a significant change in the education system, under NEP 2020.
