Music and language are deeply connected. As a singer and musician myself, it’s easiest to sing in a foreign language I don’t know than to actually study the language.
Music improves listening skills, pronunciation and memory that aid in learning. Repetition of rhythms and words help memorisation and understanding patterns required to learn and understand languages.
This is an age old way of learning, which is why children are first introduced to nursery rhymes when they are small.
Music creates a natural environment for language absorption. When children sing, clap, and move along to words, they engage multiple senses at the same time. This helps information stay longer in the mind, this is what I have broadly noticed.
Through music, vocabulary is picked up effortlessly, sentence structures become familiar, and confidence in speaking grows without fear of mistakes.
Music allows different children to understand equally. The students who find reading difficult often find auditory and movement-based learning more effective. They grasp concepts through sound, rhythm and action, making learning inclusive and accessible to all. Music encourages emotional expression as I have seen in myself over the years. It nurtures creativity, builds social skills and supports emotional well-being.
In a classroom, music brings joy, energy and unity, turning learning into an experience rather than a task. The above are my personal observations after seeing children who are into music.
