Rafiq Zakaria was not just an Indian politician but also a prominent Islamic cleric and an influential figure in Indian history of independence. He proudly represented India at the United Nations three times, showcasing his dedication to international diplomacy. Born during a time when India was striving for independence, Zakaria became the first Muslim Urban Development Minister of the newly formed Maharashtra state, paving the way for future leaders.
Throughout his life, Rafiq Zakaria was surrounded by inspiring personalities. He often interacted with Dr. Mulk Raj Anand, a notable writer and social activist, on the porch of Anand’s home, where i ( Vivek ) served as an honorary under-secretary. I also met Usha Ben Mehta, personal secretary to Mahatma Gandhi at Mani Bhawan who inspired many with her dedication to the freedom struggle. These encounters fueled his passion for social justice and community service.One highlight of my life was delivering a speech on Jamnalal Bajaj, a significant contributor to India’s freedom movement, in front of Shekar Bajaj, Jamnalal’s grandson .Rafiq Zakaria’s legacy and Usha Ben Mehta’s lives on, reminding us of the importance of leadership, service, and the unwavering pursuit of justice.
