Parents and Policymakers reconsider what ‘SCHOOL-READY’ really means at age six.
To begin formal education children must complete 6 years from the 1st of June of the academic year or the previous year. The Ministry of Education has directed that this decision aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP). It was added on that this will be implemented for the 2026-2027 academic year. The government earlier in 2002 had allowed for a relaxation to prevent class repetitions. The authorities estimate nearly 4000 students who may be affected by this decision. The court has dismissed the pleas of the parents and made it clear that no further relaxation would be granted.
Opinions are divided. The supporters argue a positive result on children as they will have more time for play and early learning that is crucial for the holistic learning and development of the children. The critics however say it is a regressive move, claiming it delays academic progress and puts unnecessary strain on the families. Some educators also expressed concern that the rigid age criteria could disrupt the schooling timeline for many children.
The debate has come to an end making the implementation inevitable. It highlights the broader question of balancing structured education with childhood development needs. The next few years will show how this policy will reshape early schooling in India. Dominica Mascarenhas a teacher from St. Xavier’s High School, Moira says implementation will be difficult but it is a good call as children should not be rushed into a rigid structure and be given time for learning with fun and play. Satish Naik a parent also agrees and welcomes this decision he says, “I actually welcome this decision. Children today face so much academic pressure so early. Giving them an extra year to play and grow before class one is a blessing in disguise. I believe that my daughter will be more confident and emotionally ready to learn by age six. I don’t want to forcefully push her to a systematic system of long hours of study so soon. Some parents feel their children are ready earlier and that is also ok, its their opinion.”
