Goa Schools Showdown!
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has reignited debates across India, particularly in Goa, where its emphasis on regional languages over English has sparked mixed reactions. While NEP advocates teaching in the mother tongue until Grade 5 (or 8 where possible) for better learning outcomes, many Goans worry that classifying English as a foreign language is a setback.
A parent remarked, “Removing foreign language options limits exposure and career opportunities.” However, educationist Uday Gaonkar argues, “Teaching in one’s mother tongue fosters a deeper connection to our roots.”
Goa’s colonial history further complicates the debate. NEP restricts foreign languages like Portuguese, which many see as vital due to cultural and economic ties with the EU. “Barring Portuguese from education is shortsighted,” says Joanne, a Goan now in Mumbai.
